South Africa beach adventure

From the fine white sand small ghost crabs stick their eyes just above the surface. From a distance I see how small birds on high legs chase the crabs. It is an interesting game in which te crabs seem to win over and over again. The wide sandy beach is almost deserted. This is truly one of the best places for a few days of enjoying South Africa's beaches. Your beach camp is situated in the ancient coastal forests feautured in this region. This unspoilt coastline has much to offer: It is the best diving spot in South Africa, you will find some interesting animals in the vicinity of the lodge and you can spend hours strolling on deserted beaches.

Tour duration: 4 days, 3 nights

Price: From £ 634 per person (high), from £ 549 per person (low) for two adults sharing

Best time to visit: All year round

Day 1: Swaziland / Richard's Bay - South Africa beach lodge (Maputuland coast)

Most travelers will drive to the coast after a short stay in Swaziland. We recommend leaving early, as it is a substantial driving distance. Leave Swaziland via the southern border post, cross into South Africa and then follow the road through Jozini to the rugged coast of Maputuland. Along the way you have a chance to see a bit of authentic Africa, the journey takes you past small traditional villages in the green rolling hills. You will arrive at the entrance of the lodge in the afternoon. Here you park your car at a cashew nuts factory as the road to the lodge is too sandy to be driven on in a normal 2x4 car. What follows is a transfer by 4x4 of about 45 minutes. The afternoon is ideal for a first introduction to the unspoiled beaches of South Africa (a 20 minute walk from the lodge), or just relax on your private terrace and soak up the view over the forest and Indian Ocean in the background with a good book. (Driving distance 223 miles)

From Richard's Bay: By means of a domestic flight you travel to the the small airport of Richard's Bay on the KwaZulu Natal coast. Here you pick up a rental car an head off in the direction of Swaziland. The drive to the lodge entrance point takes about three and a half hours. Here you park the car at the "Coastal Cashews" factory after which you will be transferred to the lodge by 4x4 vehicle. Rather not drive yourself? We can also arrange a transfer from Richard's Bay airport to the lodge.

Day 2: South Africa beach lodge (Maputuland coast)

You have many different options to spend your time at South Africa's most beautiful beach the coming days. At least take some time for a stroll on the beach close to the lodge. If you don't feel like walking from the lodge to the beach (which takes about 20 minutes), lodge staff will transfer you to the beach in about five minutes time. However, we actually recommend walking to the beach as it can be quite an interesting walk: you traverse a slice of ancient tropical forest that is home to some smaller game species. We ourselves saw a tiny red duiker scurrying among the trees. There is also a diving school based at the lodge from where you can explore the underwater world in the surroundings of the lodge (exclusive in the rate). Don't have a PADI certificate? Then seize the opportunity to make an introductory dive, this way you can practice first in the lodge's small swimming pool. We really recommend trying to make at least one or more dives: whale sharks, dolphins, turtles and even whales are seen on a regular basis. Diving possibilities in this coastal area are absolutely world class.

Day 3: South Africa beach lodge (Maputuland coast)

Waking up with the sound of the Indian Ocean in the background is pure bliss. Included during your stay are two activities per day. For example, you can opt for a guided snorkelling trip at "Lala Neck", where you can explore the underwater world without a PADI certificate. Also worthwhile is a trip to Lake Sibaya, not far from the lodge. There is some game to be seen here while you look at the sun set over the KwaZulu Natal hils, naturally with a glass of wine in hand. You can also explore the beach and the surrounding forests with a local guide, they can tell you a lot about the people that live in the area and the use of plants and trees in everyday life. You don't have to worry about breakfast and dinner during your stay, only just lunch and drinks are not included in the rate. You sleep in a semi-permanent luxury tent, of course equipped with has a complete bathroom.

Today your South Africa beach holiday comes to an end. After breakfast you'll be transferred back to the entry point and continue jour journey to Durban. Although it is a considerable driving distance, there is still time in the morning for a last quick dive in the Indian Ocean. The drive to Durban takes about four and a half hours meaning you'll get there halfway the afternoon. Normally we schedule a one night stay in Durban after which you can travel further to the famous Garden Route, see our luxury travel module "Garden Route essentials" for more information. From Durban you can also travel to Cape Town and start with "Discovering Cape Town. Chic!". Lastly, it is possible to catch a flight to Kruger/Mpumalanga Airport near Kruger National Park and stay in one of the excellent private game reserves. We recommend having a look at "Africa's Big 5: up close in Sabi Sands reserve" or "Bush Camping. Chic!" (Driving distance 229 miles)
