rovos rail

After all travellers gathered at Cape Town station it is time to board the Rovos Rail train and get acquainted with all facilities on board. Depending on the number of passengers there are one or more dining and lounge carriages. Your own Pullman suite is tastefully decorated and fully equipped. Every carriage holds five of such Pullman suites, each about seven square metres in size. During the day you can lounge on the confortable couch which is being converted into a luxurious bed in the evening. Your suite is fitted with a small bathroom including a shower. At eleven o'clock in the morning Rovos Rail pulls out of Cape Town station and the journey to Pretoria begins. The first few miles or so the train is being pulled by an authentic steam locomotive, but for practical reasons it is replaced by a diesel engine later. The first stage of the Rovos Rail journey takes you to the small village of Matjiesfontein where the train arrives in the afternoon. A scheduled excursion takes you around this friendly village which gives you the felling of stepping back in time by a hundred years or so. After one hour the Rovos train departs again and dinner is being served in the beautiful restaurant carriage. During the night the train will slowly advance in the direction of Pretoria.

In the morning breakfast awaits you in the restaurant carriage. The carriages are phenomenal in itself: often they have been completely rebuilt from scratch. The result is a true Victorian style carriage with lots of teak elements. Pure romance. During the Rovos rail journey you will cross some incredible mountain passes, of which the pass over the Hexrivier Mountains is the most spectacular. You also get to see the vast semi arid plains of the Great Karoo, which sometimes give you are real Wild West feeling. In the afternoon the Rovos Rail train pulls into the city of Kimberley. This city is the former diamond capital of the world. From the city centre there is a scheduled excursion by electric tram to the diamons museum and the "Big Hole" (the largest man made hole in the world). This recently renovated and expanded museum provides a good overview of the diamond mining industry of the past century. After your visit to the museum the train departs for the last stage of the rail journey. Of course you will be allowed time to change for dinner, which have a formal character on board of Rovos Rail.
