fishing boat dhow mozambique

You can check in at Johannesburg or Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport for a flight to Vilanculos on the Mozambique coast. The small plane brings you to Vilanculos in about three hours time. From the airplane you can enjoy some beautiful views of the African bush. After arrival you clear customs a speedboat awaits you to bring you to the island. From the boat you can see the extreme clear waters of the Indian Ocean and the islands of the achipelago in the distance, a very promising sight. For the next few days this paradise is your home. It takes some time getting used to the azure ocean, dazzling white beach flanked by palmtrees and traditional sailboats at sea.

Day 1 (continued): arrival Benguerra Island

luxury lodge Mozambique

After a small welcome drink it is time to explore Marlin Lodge. The suites are built practically on the beach and have thatched roofs. Everything is accounted for: all rooms are equipped with king size beds, coffee/tea making facilities, air conditioning and outdoor shower. From the terrace you can enjoy some great ocean views. Be sure to see some amazing sunsets as your suite is located right on the beach. The interior airs the laid back atmosphere of the tropical island. You'll feel completely rejuvenated after a couple of days. A good night's sleep is guaranteed thanks to the sound of the ocean in the background. All meals are included during your stay.

Day 2: Bararuto Archipelago Mozambique

diving Mozambique

Waking up has never been so easy going. With a little luck you can hear the fishermen singing when they venture out in the morning. They can be seen pretty much througout the day, the classic "dhows" used by the local population to fish in this rich ocean. It is also the reason why the Bazaruto Archipelago is such a popular diving destination. If you have a PADI certificate, make use of the opportunity and explore some of the dive sites close to the island. You can book your dives at Marlin Lodge, they have a fully equipped dive centre. Dives start at around US$ 90 per dive. No experience diving yet? Ask for possibilities at the dive centre, you can either do an introductionary course or go snorkelling. Underwater you will find hard and soft corals, sharks, turtles, stingrays and -in season- whale sharks.

Also above the waterline there is much to see and do. From your own terrace the beach is just a few steps away, perfect for reading a book, walking, swimming or just relaxing. Freely available are catamaran sailing boats, snorkel gear, windsurfing equipment or canoes. Want to get more active then you can opt for a waterski lesson of about half an hour. Not included in the rate, but very possible to do is go sea fishing (including swordfish) or making a day trip to one of the nearby islands. We also recommend the sunset cruise on the lodge's traditional dhow (included in the rate).
