Classic rail journey: South Africa to Vic Falls

This is one of the great classic rail journeys in history. Described by many but experienced by just few. The "Pride of Africa" belongs in the same prestigious list of trains as the Orient-Express and the Trans Siberian Express. Its history goes back to the nineteenth century: the are of the Gold Rush and Kruger. It is only since a few years that it is possible again to make this historical journey to the legendary Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. This train trip is, in our opinion, the best mode of travel to get to this natural wonder. Indulge yourself in the luxury of a bumpy train train ride that meanders through the African landscape. By the introduction of new -smaller- suites travelling with the most luxurious train has become a lot more affordable. The rail journey from Pretoria to Victoria Falls takes three days, of which you'll spend two nights on board of the Rovos Rail train. Of course it is also possible travel in the other direction. This luxury travel module is easily combined with any of our other modules starting in Johannesburg or the Victoria Falls.

Tour duration: 3 days, 2 nights

Price: From £ 1254 per person for two adults sharing

Day 1: Pretoria - Mafikeng (border post) - night train

Around ten o'clock in the morning it is time to board the most luxurious train in the world. Rovos Rail uses its own railway station in Pretora. When you arrive a little early there is time to admire a collection of classic steam engines that emphasise this elegant way of travelling. The first few miles or so the train is being pulled by an authentic steam locomotive, but for practical reasons it is replaced by a diesel engine later. On each journey at least one restaurant carriage and one lounge carriage is part of the train. The last carriage always is a panorama carriage, offering panoramic views en route. Your Pullman suite is one of a new type, of which five are placed in every carriage. The suites are tastefully furnished and provide all facilities necessary. Each Pullman suite measures 7 square metres. During the day you can make use of the comfort of a couch which will be converted into a large bed for the night. There also is a small bathroom with shower. Other facilities include a small safe, air conditioning and a mini-bar.

Today you'll have a lot of time for relaxation. Enjoy the views from the panorama carriage at the back of the train or retreat to the privacy of your own suite with a good book. Breakfast is serves in the dining wagon in the morning. These stunning carriages are a phenomenon in itself and often restored from the ground up. Now, in full splendor, these carriages wagon have a beautiful Victorian interior. After breakfast it is noce to just wander around the train a bit and get acquainted with your (often interesting) fellow passengers. After this day of rest dinner will be served at around eight o'clock in the evening. The food is of the highest quality, with an emphasis on local ingredients and dishes. We wholeheartedly recommend any the game dishes.

Day 3: Night train - Victoria Falls

rovos vic falls

You can sense the feeling of anticipation on the third day, the Victoria Falls are getting into sight. Some last moments of enjoyment abourd Rovos Rail. The train arrives at Victoria Falls station around five o'clock in the afternoon. You can see the glorious waterfalls from a distance already. This is where your Rovos Rail journey ends. We do recommend spending a few days in the vivinity of the Vic Falls and gladly make recommendations for appropriate hotels. You can also choose to stay on the Zambian side of the waterfalls by making use of our luxury travel module "Zambezi dreams: Victoria Falls". This allows you to see the Victoria Falls in full glory, but also gives you time to see some of the other attractions in the area. After your visit to Vic Falls you can easily travel back to Johannesburg by means of a regional flight (from either Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia).
