Cape Town, Kruger & Victoria Falls

Until some time ago a combined complete itinerary to Cape Town, Kruger National Park and Victoria Falls was a complicated affair. Especially a good flight connection to Livingstone in Zambia was non existent, which meant that extra flights and hotel nights needed to be scheduled in order to make all fit. This now is something of the past: we are thrilled that scheduled flights between the airports of Kruger/Mpumlanga and Livingstone are available. No annoying overnight stop in Johannesburg anymore; but going on safari in one of Kruger's private game reserves in the morning and enjoying the view over the mighty Zambezi river in Zambia in the evening. All this preceded by a visit to cosmopolitan Cape Town, where you'll spend the first few days of this luxury South Africa itinerary. Then travel to the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve for some exciting safari days, to and finally conclude your journey close to the world famous Victoria Falls.

Day 7: Sabi Sands Game Reserve

leopard game wildlife luxury

Being on a luxury safri holiday means you have to get up early in the morning. At about half past five your game ranger will give you a wake up call. After a quick tea or coffee it is time to start your morning game drive in Sabi Sands. A morning safari has a complete different character than an evening game drive: other kinds of game is seen the atmosphere is completely different. You climb aboard the open 4x4 Landcruiser with some of the other guests and head out into the bush accompanied by a game ranger and tracker. Many of the game rangers that work in Sabi Sands are born and raised in the area of the game reserve and possess a vast knowledge about anything that lives here. It is very likely that you already encounter some of the Big 5 (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo). Halfway the morning the vehicle is stopped in the middle of the bush for a delicious (and much needed by then!) cup of coffee. You will definitely start appreciating the advantages of being on safari with such well trained ranger/guides, their eyes are so much better adapted for seeing game that you yourself would easily have missed. After returning to the lodge breakfast us ready and you can start contemplating about your first morning in real Africa. From now until about four o'clock in the afternoon there is time for you to relax after which the second game drive of the day starts.

Day 8: Sabi Sands Game Reserve

gamewalk south africa safari

Another day full of safaris in Sabi Sand. You will notice that your eyes feel better adapted in noticing animals. Take the challenge and see whether you can spot game faster than the tracker who is seated in front of the car. You now also have the chance to go search for animals you haven't seen before, and maybe also some of the smaller (but no less interesting) creatures of the bush. After breakfast there's is time to rest: no luxury at all when you have to get up so early in the morning! During your last game drive you may have a chance of seeing the elusive leopard. The ranger will then shut down the car engine, lights turned off, and everybody lowers their voice. And then you listen concentratedly... will there be action or no action? An exciting safari experience, guaranteed. After another glorious day in the bush you will definitely sleep very tight. But of course, first dinner awaits you under the flickering stars.

elephant trip excursion victoria falls

With many unforgettable experiences fresh in mind you will travel to this itinerary its final destination: Livingstone in Zambia. After your driver brought you back to Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport you board a small South African Airways airplane that takes you to Livingstone in Zambia directly. After clearing customs and reclaiming your baggage another driver is waiting for you. He or she will bring you to the banks of the Zambezi River. The lodge is small and intimate, there are nine rooms only. On the premises there is an excellent restaurant, a small swimming pool, lounge area and bar. Day 10: Zambezi Vic Falls Lodge

lodge hotel vic falls

Refreshed after a good night's sleep and breakfast you have two full days to spend in and around the lodge. Most important of course is a visit to the Victoria Falls, some 14 miles from the lodge. A tour to the Zambian side of the falls is included in your stay. The water of the Zambezi River plunges 100 metres down below over a a width of more than a mile: something that can't be witnessed anywhere else in the world. The Zambezi reaches its highest water level between February and May, just after the rainy season. Most water runs through the waterfall during these months resulting in water spraying up from the bottom more than 600 metres high. The bottom of the waterfall is often not visible during these months. The best periode for a visit to the Victoria Falls is between May and August: water levels aren't too high but the power of the falls still is very impressive. Between February and August the river and falls are at their lowest level. But in whichever period you're travelling, the Victoria Falls are an impressive sight all year long. One of the advantages of travelling in the quiet months is that you can walk all the way down to the bottom of the falls.

Day 11: Zambezi Vic Falls Lodge

vic falls zambia

Also the next day you won't have to get bored. There are many activities organised from the lodge. One of the very special things to do is participating in an elephant safari. It's a complete different persepctive seeing nature from the back of an elephant. During the excursion you will spend about three hours with your own elephant, of which one hour on the back of the gentle giant. On this special type of "game drive" there is a chance of encountering animals like buffalo, zebra and giraffes. It is a memorable experience to explore the bush this way. Most impressive of all we found the warm interaction between elephant and personal trainer, as well as the incredible intelligence and skills of these animals. Joining an elephant safari costs about £ 140 per persoon. Booking ahead is highly recommended, as the activity proves very popular and may be fully booked. Feel free to enquire with your South Africa travel specialist, we are happy to help make the necessary reservations.

Besides a visit to the Victoria Falls and elephant back safari there are many other options when staying in David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa. For instance, sunset boat cruises over the Zambezi are a very popular activity, as well as making a scenic flight be helicopter over the Victoria Falls. Adventurous travellers can go bungee jumoing from the bridge near the falls or white water rafting on the Zambezi.
