Zambezi dreams: Victoria Falls

A trip to one of the natural wonders of the world should not be missed when on a luxury South Africa holiday. The Victoria Falls on the Zambia and Zimbabwe border are among the most impressive natural phenomena in the world. As such this destination provides the ultimate romantic experience. Livingstone in Zambia is becoming more and more accessible: there are daily flights from Johannesburg, but also flights from Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport near Kruger National Park. We found an intimate lodge, situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, one of the longest rivers in Africa. An ideal place to enjoy nature, tranquility and the stunning waterfalls.

After a night in Johannesburg (or Kruger National Park) your Victoria Falls adventure begins today. By means of a comfortable short flight (covering a distance similar as London - Amsterdam) you travel to Livingstone's small airport. Having picked up your baggage a transfer van awaits you to bring you to the lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River. The total transfer time from the airport adds up to about thirty minutes. The lodge is small and intimate, there are nine rooms only. On the premises there is an excellent restaurant, a small swimming pool, lounge area and bar. Rooms are built as a spacious luxury chalets right on the banks of the river. The classic chalets reminiscent of past times, but are of course fully equipped.

Day 2: Zambezi River Lodge

Refreshed after a good night's sleep and breakfast you have two full days to spend in and around the lodge. Most important of course is a visit to the Victoria Falls, some 14 miles from the lodge. A tour to the Zambian side of the falls is included in your stay. The water of the Zambezi River plunges 100 metres down below over a a width of more than a mile: something that can't be witnessed anywhere else in the world. The Zambezi reaches its highest water level between February and May, just after the rainy season. Most water runs through the waterfall during these months resulting in water spraying up from the bottom more than 600 metres high. The bottom of the waterfall is often not visible during these months. The best periode for a visit to the Victoria Falls is between May and August: water levels aren't too high but the power of the falls still is very impressive. Between February and August the river and falls are at their lowest level. But in whichever period you're travelling, the Victoria Falls are an impressive sight all year long. One of the advantages of travelling in the quiet months is that you can walk all the way down to the bottom of the falls.

Day 3: Zambezi River Lodge

Also the next day you won't have to get bored. There are many activities organised from the lodge. One of the very special things to do is participating in an elephant safari. It's a complete different persepctive seeing nature from the back of an elephant. During the excursion you will spend about three hours with your own elephant, of which one hour on the back of the gentle giant. On this special type of "game drive" there is a chance of encountering animals like buffalo, zebra and giraffes. It is a memorable experience to explore the bush this way. Most impressive of all we found the warm interaction between elephant and personal trainer, as well as the incredible intelligence and skills of these animals. Joining an elephant safari costs about £ 140 per persoon. Booking ahead is highly recommended, as the activity proves very popular and may be fully booked. Feel free to enquire with your South Africa travel specialist, we are happy to help make the necessary reservations.

Besides a visit to the Victoria Falls and elephant back safari there are many other options when staying in David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa. For instance, sunset boat cruises over the Zambezi are a very popular activity, as well as making a scenic flight be helicopter over the Victoria Falls. Adventurous travellers can go bungee jumoing from the bridge near the falls or white water rafting on the Zambezi
