Meet the locals: uThando Community Projects

Cape Town day trips

Uthando acts as an umbrella organisation for a variety of successful community projects throughout the country, but in Cape Town in particular. To get an idea what these development projects are about, we offer you the chance to go see some of these projects with your own eyes in Cape Town's townships. The Uthando day trip offers a unique and authentic opportunity to inform yourself about the social problems faced by millions of South Africans every day. During this tour you will visit one of these special projects. We find it important and particularly valuable that this tour is not set up as a tourist attraction. The aim is to inform and inspire you, respecting the dignity and privacy of the people involved in the projects. Read more about Uthando on our Uthando Community Projects page.

Cape Town's location makes it a spectacular holiday destination. South of the city centre is the Cape Peninsula where you'll find charming fishermen villages, a penguin colony and Africa's most southwestern point. This Cape Town day trip starts in the morning when you will be picked up from your Cape Town boutique hotel. Your guide will take you along some of Cape Town's most beautiful beaches en route to the fishing village of Hout Bay. Here you have time to explore the vilage or join a short bout trip in the bay (optional). The tour continues along the windswept coast to Cape Point where you can enjoy panoramic views over both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Cape of Good Hope also provides a wonderful lunch spot (not included). On the way back to the city you will also stop at the famous penguin colony near Simon's Town and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Cultural heritage in the Western Cape: Robben Island & District 6

robben island Cape Town South Africa

This tour takes you to the political past of South Africa and opens the door to meeting local Capetonians. The morning starts with a visit to the colourful "Bo Kaap" neighborhood, in the midst of the city against the slopes of Signal Hill. Generations of Cape Malay people have lived here for centruries in brightly painted houses. Next is a visit to the District 6 Museum, where once was a thriving neighborhood, but was demolished under Apartheid laws. You will get a good idea of the impact this regime had on the daily lives of so many coloured Capetonians. In the afternoon it is time to board the ferry to Robben Island. Here you visit the prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for so many years. The guides often tell impressive stories, and most of them spent time in prison during the apartheid years. Late afternoon the ferry brings you back to the V & A Waterfront. Here you can choose to stay for dinner, or you will be brought back to your hotel.
