The Cederberg: safari for the soul

At about 250 kilometres distance from Cape Town, hidden in the rugged red-orange coloured landscape, lies a nature reserve that impresses us time and time again. Probably the best feature of the Cederberg is that one of the world's best hotels can be found here. The area is visited by just a few travellers, this is not a mass tourism destination. The dry landscape surprises with immense open plains, spectacular waterfalls and deep ravines that are especially well visible when walking through the area. From the dirt road you would just not expect the incredible natural beauty that showcases itself when exploring the area on foot. In three days time you'll be completely rejuvenated. The Cederberg is also an ancient hunting ground of the original inhabitants, the San. The reserve contains some of the finest examples of San rock painting, some of which are to be believed to be over 10,000 years old.

Day 1: Cape Town - Cederberg Wilderness Reserve

holiday luxury Cederberg South Africa

It takes about three hours to drive from Cape Town to the Cederberg. En route you pass small villages like Piketberg, Citrusdal and Clanwilliam. The closer you get to your destination, the more the landscape changes: from open, green and airy to a more dry and mountainous landscape. Once you have checked in at the lodge there is time for relaxation. A swim in one of the natural rock pools near the lodge is just the perfect way to do so. At about five o'clock there is an opportunity to join an afternoon drive through the reserve in an open Landrover. Accompanied by a ranger/guide you will explore the area and search for smaller game in the game reserve. Animals found in the Cederberg include bontebok, Cape zebra, gemsbok and wildebeest. When the sun starts to set, it is time to sit back in a comfy chair and enjoy one of the finest South African reds. With the sun slowly setting colours change dramatically, rocks become deep orange to even purple, an amazing sight. After the first day in the Cederberg, which is concluded by a mouthwatering dinner, you can retreat to your room very satisfied. Rooms are equipped with mini-bar, private pation, air conditioning, shower and bath. Breakfast in included of course. (Driving distance 167 miles)
