Day 4: Sabi Sands Game Reserve

gamewalk safari south africa

You'll spend to full days in the African bush. A typical day when staying in a private game reserve goes like this: Early in the morning your ranger/guide knocks on your door, time to get ready for a gamedrive. After a cup of coffee or tea the ranger accompanies you for a morning safari. Many of the game rangers that work in Sabi Sands are born and raised in the area of the game reserve and possess a vast knowledge about anything that lives here. Unique about Sabi Sands is the incredible healthy wildlife poulation occuring here in great numbers. It is not unusual to see elephants, lions, leopards but also cheetahs during a single gamedrive. As a result of the dense wildlife population distances covered are relatively short while on gamedrive. Also your room is a beautiful place. They are spacious, and are equipped with air conditioning, private terrace, as well as an indoor and outdoor shower. Just before dinner your ranger picks you up from the room. This might sound a little strange but is necessary as the lodge is unfenced. Sometimes dinner is delayed a bit because an elephant walks through the lodge.

Day 5: Sabi Sands Game Reserve

wild dog

After a morning gamedrive it is time for breakfast. Breakfast is served on a terrace overlooking the large waterhole in fron of the lodge. It is not uncommin to see elephants and buffalos drinking from the waterhole while enjoying breakfast. In the afternoon there is time to relax at the swimming pool or in the privacy of your own room. Want to experience something different? After lunch there is an opportunity to join your ranger for a gamewalk. This is a safari on foot and emphasis is more on smaller things in the bush like birds, insects and plants. Between half past three and four the second gamedrive of the day starts. The bush looks and feels very different in the evening compared to a morning safari, there also is a chance of spotting different animals. Dinner is usually served in the traditional "boma": an enclosure made of torn bushes warmly lit by oil lamps and candles. The excellent chef serves delicious meals under Africa's starry sky. There also is a chance that dinner is served elsewhere, maybe outside the lodge in the bush?

Day 7: Bazaruto Archipelago Mozambique

dhow Mozambique

Waking up has never been so easy going. With a little luck you can hear the fishermen singing when they venture out in the morning. They can be seen pretty much througout the day, the classic "dhows" used by the local population to fish in this rich ocean. It is also the reason why the Bazaruto Archipelago is such a popular diving destination. If you have a PADI certificate, make use of the opportunity and explore some of the dive sites close to the island. You can book your dives at Marlin Lodge, they have a fully equipped dive centre. Dives start at around US$ 90 per dive. No experience diving yet? Ask for possibilities at the dive centre, you can either do an introductionary course or go snorkelling. Underwater you will find hard and soft corals, sharks, turtles, stingrays and -in season- whale sharks.

Dag 8 & 9: Bazaruto Archipelago Mozambique

diving Mozambique

Also above the waterline there is much to see and do. From your own terrace the beach is just a few steps away, perfect for reading a book, walking, swimming or just relaxing. Several activities are included in your stay. Due to tides the ocean sometimes retreats rather far from the lodge. In that case hotel staff transfers you to the nearby Dolphin Bay Beach per 4x4 vehicle in about ten minutes time. There are some excellent swimmimg and snorkeling possibilities here at the reef in front of the beach. Freely available are catamaran sailing boats, snorkel gear, windsurfing equipment or canoes. Want to get more active then you can opt for a waterski lesson of about half an hour. Not included in the rate, but very possible to do is go sea fishing (including swordfish) or making a day trip to one of the nearby islands. We also recommend the sunset cruise on the lodge's traditional dhow.
